To worry is to feel tense about the future – immediate or distant. At its most intense, worry qualifies as an emotional disturbance often called Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) that at some point afflicts about 5% adults. Lesser degrees of worry are, however, present in almost every person. The point remains that, although a universal experience, worrying can cause much distress and so, we must try to understand worry and deal with it.
What causes worry?
Sometimes the trigger is a catastrophic event. Many people who experienced the Great Depression or the Holocaust could never overcome their fear of future uncertainties. Domineering or demanding parents play a role too. The children then develop the sense that they have no control over their world and must always be wary about what might happen to them. Sometimes, if children are thrust too soon into adult roles, they may worry.
Does worrying help?
No. It does not prepare us for the real world. In fact, when we panic, our brain does not function properly. Moreover, worry can prevent the body from reacting flexibly to stresses in the environment.
So, what should we do to avoid worry? The following steps might help:
1. Write down what is worrying you:
If you write down what is worrying you, you will see that most of it can be dealt with. Putting it in writing often helps us see the problem clearly, which makes it easier to look for solutions.
2. 15 minutes of worry-vaccination:
Everyday, spend about 15 minutes thinking about the things that worry you and look carefully at the list you have written down. Then consider each item of worry as a problem that can be solved sooner or later, and not as a hopeless situation. Remember, how you look at a problem is very important.
3. Worry-free time:
The rest of the day, consciously make an effort to be free of worry. Focus on the positive in your life, the happiness and love you are getting as well as giving.
4. Your answer should be written down:
When your mind suggests a solution (it often does) to a problem, write it down immediately, before it vanishes from your thought-process.
5. Weekly evaluation:
Every weekend, keep aside about 30 minutes evaluating how much you have progressed in finding solutions to your problems.
6. Trust life and your experiences:
Trust this beautiful, often mysterious, series of experiences collectively called life. Life gives us the answers, shows us the way. But we have to be patient and hopeful.
7. Invest in yourself:
The more you invest in yourself: your happiness and your development, the easier it will be for you to solve your problems. Wear the colour you like, interact with people who make you feel good, hold on to your dreams. These help in building up self-confidence which in turn makes you optimistic about the future. Thus, you will minimize worry.
8. The higher-power:
Believe that there is a power higher than humankind. It is that power which controls the cosmic laws of life and death, of deeds and consequences. If you can have faith in the benevolence of that higher power I call GOD, there will not be much cause to worry, no matter what you are going through.

As Swetha put it nicely, "The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, worry about the future, or anticipate troubles, but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly.” I saw this quote that"“Worry never robs tomorrow of its sorrow, it only saps today of its joy" Still there is no life without worry. Ayesha has given sensible guidelines to follow. When the problems are big,prayer is the only answer.The author always comes up with very good posts.

A good post, Ayesha. Yes, every man and woman has an in built mechanism, which produces worry. Because the future is unpredictable and uncertain, we worry. If we could see into the future (like we can clearly see the past) there would be less worry. Unfortunately, that isin't possible, and so worry will continue to dominate mankind. To get over it, as Swetha has written, it is imperative to become aware and conscious of our thoughts and to focus completely on the present moment. This is unfortunately not at all easy, for thoughts (often useless and repetitive) of the past and future continuously intrude into our mind. And it also helps to know that worry about the future is useless and futile, because the future has a million possibilities, and we often worry only about one or two likelihoods. A reading of the book The Power of Now will go a long way in conquering worry.

really a nice post Ayesha....!! according to me there is no point worrying an anything... as it goes"Give your Best and leave the Rest" but make sure you give your best.. when you really want something ,the universe always conspires in your Favour.. the point i am trying to make here is" Desperation in what ever you do...." whenever you are 100% committed belive me you need not worry, the result wil always be the best... the worry comes only when your approach is casual towards that issue.... even if you are not 100% committed then try to give your sincere efforts which will be surely rewaded sooner or rather later... there is lot in store with life.... so why worry and have pimples when you can smile and have dimples..!!!

Yes. Worry is a perfect example for slow poison. One of the best medicines is to believe in self and Yoga is excellent in tackling this problem.

Writing down one's worries definitely help. It reduces the desperation and stress. I am practising this, and it gives excellent results. If I lose a thing, I write it on my lost items list. If we search in desperation, we are sure not to find. It must be lying somewhere hidden our own house. If we are searching without desperation, we are sure to find it. Taking worries to God, is the best way to deal with worries. It gives us a feeling that we are not alone in our fight with the situation, there is someone who is guiding and helping us.

A planned manual for those who want to eliminate worries. A nice post. Start working and stop worrying. People, who do not have much to do, worry a lot. For idle persons there is ample of time to worry. There are persons like being anxious. They just do not believe that everything is perfect, but they go after something to catch hold of it to worry about. There is a saying “The idle person´s mind is devil´s workshop”. When you do the thing you like, you never ask for vacation. Persons who derive great satisfaction out of their work, do not find time to worry. Best of luck.

Very true and very well expressed. Worry kills out health,wealth and happiness and eventually destroys mankind. A small mishap tends to lead many into this 'no entry' zone and kills the pleasure of existence. Either about the past or future. Its so true to the saying that yesterday was history,tomorrow its a mystery and the today's the gift.Thats why its called the present. Sadly many forgo this 'present'.

One way that I have found to be "WORKING TRUMP CARD FOR WORRY" is "AUTO SUGGESTION". I am practicing this art almost regularly. Before hitting the bed,and when U lose sleep with the worry of thoughts bombarding U, telling yourself "RELAX,SLEEP WELL" repeatedly,consciously instructing your MIND, has brought about the desired results. Even bowels can be instructed to RELAX and not throw up ACIDITY. THAT is he POWER OF THE AUTO SUGGESTION.
I envy your passion to write and compassion for the soul-talk.
I jsut read your 'power of the kind word' @ msn.
Was wondering if you missed to bring in the Golden Rule in Islam for kind word (a kind word is better than charity given in an unhuman manner; I will get you the verse number, if required)
